 INTRODUCTION

The European Union is one of recent history's most important developments.   Throughout Europe its influence is being felt.   Will this alliance create a new center of world power? Germany is a major player in this alliance.  Germany's leadership is an important factor in the success of the EU.  Other, newly created Eastern European, states must look at the alliance critically as they ponder the path they need to take to survive.  As a class, you will consider some pertinent questions the EU might face in today's world.

• Group one:  as a newly freed eastern european country, you are considering applying to the union for membership.  It is your task to research and decide whether you should apply.  After researching the EU, your group will decide which path to take:  apply or not.  You will then need to convince your legislature to agree with your position.

• Group two:  you will have the role, as representatives of Germany, whether you will support the entrance of the applying country.  Your task will be to research Germany's role in the EU and how accepting newly formed eastern european countries will affect the EU.  After you have decided your position, you will then need to convince the legislative body of Germany to vote in favor of your decision.
