SOPHOCLES BIOGRAGHY.
sophocles
was born in Colonus, Atticaaround 495 b.c.e. . Sophocles was a man of great
personal charm and happiness. According to tradition Sophocles wrote 123
plays and had 24 victoies in the cities annual dramatic contest. Only 7
tragedies are preserved in full at this time. Sophocles was born of a wealthy
family, and enjoyed the friendship of such leading political and intellectual
figures as Pericles and Herodotus. Sophocles had divided his life into
3 different periods. The first period, Ajax. The second period , was represented
by antigone . and the third period, his maturity. Ajax, sophocles earliest
extent play, dramatizes the upcompromising nobility, but also the rigidity
of the old heroic ideal. Antigone, which turns on the heroine's devotion
to her dead brother polynices. Oedipus rex is one of the influenced plays
ever written, mainly because of its powerful conjunction of character and
its destiny. Sophocles technical innovations made possible the further
development of the drama along with more realistic lines. In most of his
plays, Sophocles poses the questions of devine justice in terms of human
charactor rather than in terms of the cosmic order. Sophocles soon came
upon and famed "piety" durring the later ears of his life. He was thought
to be the bearer of destiny that is mysteriously bound with the devine
will. Overall Sophocles great dramatic achievement was to reinterpt the
ancient myths through a fuller development of individual charactor.
