1780-1820: George III is king of England.
1799: United Irishmen rebelled on behalf of Irish autonomy. However, they were defeated at Vinegar Hill.
1801: Ireland is unified with Great Britain to form the United Kingdom.
1793-1815: The Napoleonic Wars with France occupied much of England's attention. The fighting was sporadic, punctuated by English naval victories at the Battle of the Nile (1798) and Trafalgar (1805).They eventually brought Napoleon at bay at Waterloo, near Brussels, Belgium.
1815: The end of the Napoleonic Wars brought economic disaster and depression.  The Corn Law of 1815 drove up prices of grain. Many wanted social reform.
1819: At Peterloo, near Manchester, protests were controlled by armed force, resulting in many deaths and hundreds of  injuries. The "Peterloo Massacre" caused the repressive Six Acts, aimed at extinguishing dissent.
