The River-Merchant's Wife: A Letter
Authored by: K.Price and A.Jenkins

In china at the time it seemed as if the people got married at a very young age. The young woman in the story seems as if she was not excited about getting married. But she has no other choice. She is apart of a culture, that has this belief. The woman slowly begins to change and has to face the fact that she is married to him.

The Wife seems to be a typical young lady who has to go by her beliefs. She would have rather choose someone else to be her mate. She begins to feel a lot of grief and sorrow near the end of the poem. And she starts speculating on things, she probably thought you would never speculate on.

The husband seems to also be a typical male, with a feel of sadness in his heart.

The poem was very interesting as far as its content and use of words. And emotional feel makes you more into the tone of the poem. The word usage helps explain how the young girl was feeling. About her husband, and why she felt that way. “By the gate now the moss is grown, the different mosses” this shows how the time period of the poem has changed.. As you refer back to the beginning, it says “Played I about the front gate, pulling flowers”.This was kind of ironic because her feelings change dramatically through out the poem.

The poem was great. But the ending could have been better, and changed. To put a twist with a better mood for the ending. This would have made it seem more pleasant. Since others enjoy reading about pleasant things.

I would recommend this to any who is interested. And can relate to the sets of tones in different work. And are able to appreciate it and how it makes the work better. People, who branch out and read several things, would enjoy the concept of this poem. And it’s true meaning.More then likely learn about a different culture.
