The Life of Giovanni Boccaccio
(1313-1375)
Giovanni Boccacio's birthplace is unsure but they said he probably
was born in Tuscany. He was the illigitimate
son of a merchant. As a young man he stopped his studies of canon
law. In Naples he wrote in verses and prose. He was well into society and
socialized quite often. He soon fell in love with a noble lady which he
made famous under the name of Fiammetta. Up to 1350 he in Florence and
in Naples writing many poems and pastorals. After 1350 he gained the position
of diplomat and was entrusted of public affairs. During this period of
time he formed man lasting friendships with Francesco Petrarch, Boccaccio
and visited Rome, Ravenna, Avignon and Brandenburg.
In 1358 he wrote his greatest work called Decameron. This work was
composed of stories by seven ladies and 3 gallants when they spent 10 days
in a Florentine church trying to avoid the plague. During his last years
Boccaccio lived in retirement at Certaldo and Boccaccio died on December
21, 1375.
