Japan is located in the
North Pacific Ocean off the coast of the Asian continent. It is composed
of four main islands along with many other minor islands. Mountians dominate
about 80 percent of the country.
The exact place of Basho's birth
is unknown but is believed to be about 300 miles south of Kyoto.
