Florence

Dante was born in Florence.  As you can see from the map Florence is a city in Italy between Prato and Poppi.  During the time Dante lived in Florence around 1265, the city was divided up into city-states where the balance of power was having major problems while the church was tryinjg to take over.  Two factions, the Guelfs and the Ghibellines, determined, for the greater part, the political affairs of Florence.  The Holy Roman empire had a big role in them fall of the empire under the rule of Charlemagne.
