Leo Nikolayevich Tolstoy, one of the world's most famous authors, was born
August 28th, 1828. He was born in Yasnaya Polyana, Tula Province, Russia.
In 1830, Tolstoy's mother died, and then in 1837 his father dies,
as well. Orphaned as a young boy, Tolstoy was raised by his aunts. Living
a secluded and sheltered life, Tolstoy knew very little about how the outside
world really was. Leo Tolstoy spent his early education, in his inherited
estate Yasnaya Polyana, being taught by tutors.
Yasnaya Polyana is located in the Tula Province of Russia. Yasnaya Polyana,
Tolstoy's birthplace, is about hundred miles from Moscow. Yasnaya
Polyana is the place where Tolstoy was born and spent most of his lifetime
at. His grave is on Stary Zakaz Hill. Tolstoy wrote many of his most famous
books and essays in that house.
Russia, Tolstoy's homeland, is the largest Commonwealth of Independent
States. Russia takes up most of eastern Europe and northern
Asia. It touches four different oceans or seas. The oceans
are the Pacific and Arctic, and the seas are Baltic and Black. Russia
surrounds Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia,
Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and China.
At sixteen years of age Tolstoy starts attending the Kazan University.
About three years later, he leaves the University without his law degree.

Yasnaya Polyana, Tolstoy began to spend more and more time in the larger
cities. About 1852, Tolstoy joined his brother in the army. He was
in the Caucasus (Army). Some of Leo Tolstoy's first works were made while
he was in the military. His first work was called Childhood, the
first novel in a autobiographical trilogy. The other two parts being, Boyhood,
and Youth.
Tolstoy lived during some interesting times. Political and industrial reforms
were springing up everywhere. The French Revolution had occurred and France
was now a Republic during his time. The United States had gained it's independence
from Great Britain. Cries for independence sprung up in countries all over
Europe. The Crimean War happened during Tolstoy's time, as well.
The Crimean War was started due to the fact that Russia, France, and Great
Britain all had interests in the Ottoman Empire (and could not get along
very well to begin with). In fact, Tolstoy fought during the
Crimean War, helping de |
