Born: July 20, 1304, Aires.

Nationality: Italian.

His father (?-1326) was a lawyer.

He is considered the first modern poet.
-
He is also considered the first great humanist.

Until when he was eight, he lived in Tuscany then moved to
Avignon, France (1312).

Studied law (at his father's wishes) at Bologna, Carpenter,
and Montpellier.

When his father died he was free to pursue poetry.

Met Laura (de Novas?), a Frenchwoman (1308?-1348) on April
6, 1327.
-
Served the church most of his life.
-
Believed in a unified Italy and that it is the cultural heir
of the Roman Empire.
-
Wished to see the Roman Empire back in power.
-
Worked with Giovanni Boccaccio.
-
Was made poet laureate by the Roman Senate in 1341.
-
From 1353-1374 traveled throughout Italy.
-
Died: July 18 or 19, 1374, Arc.

The time period:

This time (early to mid 14th century) is regarded as the
Later Middle Ages.
-
Great famines ravished the European continent, namely Black
Death.
-
During this time their was also the Hundred Years' war.
-
The wealth of the average citizen increased, although they
were still fairly poor.
-
Italian art was in the classic style.
-
Other great writers during this time: Giovanni Boccaccio,
Daunt Alighieri, Geoffrey Chancre, Thomas Mallory, Gallium de Machete,
and Francis Villain.

of biographies.

"Africa" (1338-1342), an epic poem about
the Roman conqueror Scope Africans.

" De virus illustrious" (a.k.a. Quondam
variorum illustrious epitome) (1338-1343).

"Secret mum" (1342-1343).

"Treatise De Vita Solitaire" (1346-1356).

"De opt religious" (1347).

"Metric" (1350).

"Epistle metric" (1350-1363) (66 "letters")
a collection of poems, many dedicated to his love, Laura.

"Familiarium rearm Libra xxiv" (1351-1356).

"De remedies utriusque fortune" (1354).

"Senilium rearm Libra" (1361-1374).
