Works Cited: What was going on back then?
Gogol was born in 1809, the same year as
Charles Darwin, a major figure in science during the
eighteen hundreds. Other major advances in science were developed
during this cenury such as the discovery of bacteria by
Louis Pasteur in 1850, and the concept of Genetics by Gregor
Mendell. Also, in 1809 the Napoleonic wars with
Austria commenced. This year also marked the year of the
famous Gettysburg battle during the Civil War in America.
This century gave way to the government reform in Russia
with regards to Socialist system and Marxism. However one of
the most influential changes that tookplace during this time period
was probably the American Industrial revolution which shaped our lives
as we know them to be today.
