Dear Parent,
I would like to take a moment
to introduce myself and to describe my class and my expectations for your
son or daughter. My name is Sharon Lineberry, and I teach Average Level
English 9. I am in my 16th year at Enloe and am anxious to work
with you and your child to make this a successful year.
English 9, a required course
for promotion to 10th grade, includes literature, writing, grammar
and vocabulary development. I encourage students to think independently
and creatively and to become self-motivated learners. Over the course of
the year, we will be studying the following works of literature: Anthem,
Rand
The Odyssey, Homer
Great Expectations, Dickens
To Kill a Mockingbird,
Lee
I Know Why the Caged Bird
Sings, Angelou
Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare
Selected poems, short stories
and essays
In addition to these required
works that we will study as a class, students will read and complete projects
on books that they choose themselves each quarter. I am anxious for my
students to come to enjoy reading, and I realize that some of the books
on the required curriculum list might not spark students’ interest as fully
as more modern novels might. Your son or daughter will receive a detailed
description of the independent reading project within the first week or
two of school.
As I mentioned earlier, students
must pass English 9 to move on to 10th grade. Unfortunately,
many freshmen have difficulty adjusting to high school, resulting in a
high 9th grade failure rate. I say this not to discourage you
but to encourage you to take an active role in helping your child avoid
problems. I will make you aware of your child’s progress through interim
reports EVERY quarter and through notes and phone calls. In addition, you
could help your child in the following ways:
-
Talk with him/her about class activities
and assignments
-
Ask to see his/her assignment calendar
for English
-
Help him/her select books for independent
reading
-
Discuss reading assignments with
him/her (If you’re really ambitious, you could even read along)
-
Quiz him/her on vocabulary definitions
as preparation for vocabulary tests
-
Read and proofread writing assignments
I will make every attempt to contact
you if I see that your child is having problems, but please feel free to
contact me as well. You can get in touch with me by sending a note with
your child, calling the school (856-7860) to leave a message, or sending
e-mail to: sharonline@mindspring.com.
Sincerely,
Sharon S. Lineberry
