Grand Harmonies

Enloe High School has the largest high school orchestra program in the Wake County Public School System with 154 string students. Currently, we offer four orchestras in which to participate. Below is a brief description of each:

1. Concert Orchestra: This orchestra is designed to continue the study of the fundamentals of music and technique. Students are expected to participate in all performance activities of this group. Previous playing experience needed. No audition required.
   
   
2. String Ensemble: This orchestra will expand the technical proficiency of the members through the best in string orchestra literature. More advanced studies of intonation, shifting, and musicianship will be offered. Students are expected to participate in all performance activities of this group. Entrance by audition only.
   
   
3. Chamber Orchestra: This orchestra is for students with a high level of technical proficiency. The emphasis of this group is on the performance of chamber music. Students are expected to participate in all performance activities of this group. Entrance by audition only.
   
   
4. Symphony Orchestra: This orchestra is open to students with a very high level of technical proficiency. The emphasis will be on the performance of the best of full orchestra literature. Students are expected to participate in all performance activities of this group. Entrance by audition only. Symphony winds will be selected by audition in the fall and must be fully enrolled members of the Enloe High School Band.

2008-2009 Audition Dates

Auditions for all orchestral groups are held in the Spring preceeding each school year. The dates below are the required audition dates for these groups. Interested students must prepare and attend the appropriate audition date for their instrument. Audition requirements are listed farther down this page.

Violins Only:
Tuesday, April 29, 2008
2:45pm – 5:00pm

Viola, Cello, Bass Only:
Thursday, May 1, 2008
2:45pm – 5:00pm

Audition Requirements for All Instruments

1. Play the required scales from memory (listed below)
2. Slur 4 per bow, no arpeggios
3. A two-minute solo of your choice (No pop music or parts for orchestra or quartet)
4. Pre-selected sight-reading

Required Scales for All Instruments

Violin: G & B-flat major, 3 octaves, 4 notes per bow
Viola & Cello: C & D major, 3 octaves, 4 notes per bow
Bass: E & G major, 2 octaves, 4 notes per bow
