These groups have for many years proceeded to win recognition for Enloe as a musical powerhouse through their consistantly high scores at Contests and impactful representation in public concerts. The program is ultimately for the students to forward their skills in and appreciation of music in a structured environment and to expose them to many styles and difficulties of music. Students genuinely enjoy the classes and music that is played, which lends itself to greater effort on their part to better the band. Enloe's bands are what they are because of the students who participate in them. Concert BandsThe Enloe Wind Ensemble is the top performing wind group at Enloe. The Wind Ensemble performs only the most technically and musically demanding band literature. This group participates yearly in the state festival and has consistently received superior ratings in "Grade VI". In the past, the Wind Ensemble has performed in national festivals in Virginia, New York City, and Orlando. This year the Wind Ensemble is travelling to Gatlinburg, Tenessee, for the Smokey Mountains Concert Festival. Enrollment in Wind Ensemble is dominated by upper classmen but talented rising freshmen can earn chairs in this band. This band rehearses sixth period. Enrollment is by audition only. The Symphonic Band is the second concert wind group at Enloe. The Symphonic Band plays music in the grade "IV"-"V" range. The Symphonic Band meets during second period and plays several concerts throughout the year. Audition required. The Concert Band is the introductory concert wind group at Enloe. The Concert Band is open to all beginning or developing wind or percussion players at Enloe, and is offered first period. Marching BandThe Marching Band is a strictly volunteer organization that meets after school during football season. Though it is voluntary, attendance at rehearsals and performances is mandatory for all Marching Band members. The Marching Band participates in a number of competitions during the fall and performs in local parades. The 2006 show is entitled Ritual and is based on music from the movie King Kong. Jazz BandThe Jazz Ensemble performs music of varied style such as swing, samba, bossa-nova, ballads, etc. The instrumentation is limited to a traditional "big band" setting. The Jazz Ensemble meets after school during the Spring rather than as a class period. There is a strong emphasis on sightreading and individual practice among members because of the quick and few rehearsals before concerts. The Jazz Ensemble frequently performs outside of the school setting and is therefore one of the most visible ensembles at Enloe. Enrollment is by audition only. Also offered is a Jazz Improv class. This class splits players up into small jazz combos to teach the players to rely on one another for cues to play a piece without a conductor. Emphasis is on individual improvement as well as advancement of the Jazz genre. Predominant instruments are Guitar, Bass (String or Electric), and Drumset, and most combos will also have a Wind or Piano player. Enrollment by director recommendation only. More Band OpportunitiesThere are numerous opportunities throughout the year for individual students to further their musical experience through extracurricular and optional auditioned groups or performance clubs. These include the Enloe Music Club, the Enloe Symphony Orchestra Wind Section, the North Carolina Central District All-District Band Clinic, the UNC All-Carolina Band Clinic, the UNC-Greensboro Carolina Band Clinic, the North Carolina All-State Band Clinic, and the Enloe Jazz Ensemble. The several Band Clinics availible to students are auditioned ensembles at off-campus sites. The clinics are two day intensive workouts culminating in a concert at the end of the clinic. The bands often have celebrated conductors or composers from around the country come in to conduct the students. The ESO Wind Section is comprised of self-motivated wind and percussion players interested in going beyond the traditional concert band setting and moving into the world of Symphony Orchestra music. This group of students give up their fifth period lunch to meet with the strings sections of ESO twice a week to prepare for concerts. They also experience a different conducting style under the baton of the orchestra conductor, Beth McCollum. Seating by audition only. Supporting Enloe BandThe Enloe Band Boosters is the parent organization of the Enloe Band Program. Without this organization, the Enloe Band Program would cease to function. The Band Boosters coordinate all of the band's fundraising, marching band camp, chaperoning field trips, and other functions as necessary. All Enloe Band parents are eligible and encouraged to join.
