The Freshman Experience

The social studies requirement for ninth grade is Civics & Economics, or C&E - formerly known as Economic, Legal, & Political Systems, or ELP. An Honors C&E course with strong focus on topics, research, and historical studies is also available for students. Honors courses emphasize a high level of academic work on both an individual and group level.

9th Grade Civilizations & Cultures

Freshmen may elect to enroll in Civilizations & Cultures (C&C), which combines their social studies and English classes in a cooperative learning environment - fulfilling both required credits in a back-to-back double-period course. Students meet in large seminar settings for guest speakers, group presentations, student led seminars, and media presentations.

10th Grade Civilizations & Cultures

The sophomore curriculum calls for an education directed toward a history of the world. World Civilizations is a course that introduces the student to a survey of world history through traditional teaching strategies. Sophomores may elect one of four options to complete their social studies requirement: World History, Honors World History, AP World History, or Civilizations and Cultures (2-period AP Social Studies / Honors English block).

C&C is a collaborations between AP World Civilizations and Honors 10th grade English honors with an interdisciplinary focus. 10th grade C&C concentrates on exposing students to a variety of different teaching and learning styles. Projects, presentations, seminars, technology, and class discussions present and encourage understanding of the curriculum. C&C prepares students to take the AP World History exam administered in the Spring.
