Greek (Ελληνικά)

Teacher: Barrett Robbins

Courses

Level 1

The course begins with intensive study that will enable students to master the Greek alphabet quickly. Within three days, students are writing in Greek, and they are reading Greek by the end of the first week. Students increase their mastery of Classical Greek by reading a continuous narrative about the lives of a fifth century BC Greek family. In the process, they explore such ancillary topics as Greek mythology, religion, philosophy, theatre, science, medicine, and history. Excerpts from New Testament Greek are incorporated into the text for those students who wish to explore them, as are examples of Greek Wisdom. Computerized vocabulary drills and web-based translation and grammar aids are used throughout the course.

Level 2

The study of Greek grammar and culture continues as the narrative about a Greek family is interwoven with historical readings from Herodotus and Thucydides, as well as longer New Testament Greek passages. Grammatical emphasis is on the mastery of the Greek verb. At the completion of the course, students will be ready to explore a wide variety of Greek literature.

Levels 3 and 4

Students will read a variety of authors and explore genres including epic, drama, history, and philosophy. Works to be studied may include (but are not limited to) the epic poetry of Homer, the plays of Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, and Aristophanes, the histories of Herodotus and Thucydides, and the philosophy of Plato and Aristotle.
