Courses

German 1

This course will provide an introduction to the basic grammar and vocabulary of the language, with equal emphasis on the four areas of proficiency: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Information regarding the life, customs, and culture of the people is included and students will explore specific cultural topics in great depth through guided projects.

German 2

This course continues to develop students' proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. By the end of the course, the students will have been introduced to the entire basic grammar. Cultural lessons and applied communication will be integrated into the curriculum. Students' understanding of vocabulary, grammar and culture will be assessed by substantive sythesis projects.

German 3

This course emphasizes development of reading, listening, and speaking skills and provides a review of the basic grammar. Students will engage in many activities designed to encourage speaking proficiency as well as listening and responding to activities pulled from media sources in the target language. Emphasis is on collaborative work in the target language.

German 4

This course provides a variety of activities designed to increase students' proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Class format incorporates reading a variety of genre as well as writing and producing original skits and plays. Television broadcasts and films in the target language are also analyzed. Grammar will be reviewed independently with class emphasis on reading and speaking skills.

Advanced Placement German

In this course students will work independently on in-depth projects examing literary masterpieces and engage in activities designed to enhance their listening and speaking proficiency. At the end of the course, students may elect to take the optional Advanced Placement Examination, which is administered by the College Testing Service at Princeton University. Upon satisfactory completion of the examination, students may receive advanced credit, advanced placement, or both at the college to which they have been accepted.
