Mon, 9/27/04 - Hiya, everybody! This is Diana with your daily dose of china. On Monday, we attended Jiaonan #1 Middle School's flag raising ceremony. They sang the national anthem and a student made a speech. In the afternoon, we visited Qing Dao, a city about a hour and a half away.

Qing Dao is famous for three things--the blue sky, the beautiful coastline, and the red-tiled roofs. Unfortunately, it was hazy today so we couldn't see the scenery clearly. We visited the aquarium with "the world's biggest single acrylic exhibit water column." This time we didn't find Nemo but we did find Dory£¡We also saw jellyfish and spidercrabs. For lunch, we had a taste of Peking duck. Afterwards, we visited Xiao Yu Shan (Little Fish Mountain) and climbed to the pagoda at the top. Tonight, when we return to Jiaonan, we will learn how to make dumplings with the Australian students who are also staying at the school. Bye, everybody! Stay tuned tomorrow for your daily dose of China!

9/25 - This is Amanda Barbee reporting with your daily dose of China from Qu Fu. We are having a blast here in the birthplace of Confucious. OUr first stop was the Kong Fu (Concucious) Temple, which was awesome! The buildings were so beautiful and we learned a lot about Confucious. Then we went to Kong Fu's Palace, where Andrew, Ember, and Darren got to try on some...interesting costumes. We even got to sit in front of Confucious' tomb! How crazy is that?! After doing a lot of shopping, we found Nemo and Elmer Fudd finally caught Bugs Bunny (AKA we ate a fish that was staring at us and many of us ate rabbit for the first time). We miss all of you! See ya in two weeks!

9/25 - Here are some more picures from china. One shows Amanda Barbee, Cliff Bridges, Andrew Herrera, and Diana Chen in front of Confuscious's tomb. Another shows Andrew and Darren Brown dressed as emperors and Andrew is chasing off Darren with his shoe. Then there is Ember Melcher dressed as an Empress and hugging Viren Patel. Haseeb Fatmi and Andrew are posing front of a pillar carved with the dragons that only emperors were allowed to have. Diana Chen is in her tourist hat. --Ember

9/25 - Hey Enloe, This is T Chambliss with day 4 of yet more news from the country that's just a short hop and a few thousand miles of swimming across the Pacific; in a word: China. We started the day today with a trip to the Mayor's office to visit with the Vice Mayor of Jiaonan (the town in which we're currently staying). The Mayor was unavailable because of a trip to Spain. After learning about future development and education plans for the town and asking a few questions, the intrepid adventurers journeyed outside for one of those most exciting adventures; a photo-op. While standing around being blinded by men with cameras is not in itself terribly interesting, the fun was had at Darren Brown's expense when the Vice-Mayor decided he looked so gosh-darned handsome, she wanted him for her own son. While thus far Darren has chosen to keep his last name and his citizenship thus far, he may reconsider the offer when he realizes how much make-up work is waiting for him back home. The group then piled onto a bus to venture out to Mount Lang Ya Tai, a mountain near the coast whose construction was ordered by Emperor Qin; 30,000 people working 3 months have left us several millenia later with a really long climb, and an excellent view to boot. Near the top of the mountain lies a temple with a scaled-down replica of the famous terracotta army. Following the trip Down the mountain (which included a race with Mr. Fu, an English teacher at our school, who also happens to be able to run faster down steps than any of us thought possible), we went to the Isle of the Empress, where the whole group spent some time climbing around the rocky shore attempting to take good pictures [such as this one of Andrew Herrera and Amanda Barbie]. After that came the long bus ride back home, and a welcome invitation back to the houses, and the beds thereof, of our host families. Anyway, that said, I hope all is well at Enloe (particularly the Football team- I hope you guys did well on Friday; keep working hard, and don't miss me too much), enjoy the rest of your 2nd period. Until next week sometime, this is it from me. Take Care, T Chambliss

This is Ember Melcher reporting with your daily dose of China. We spent yesterday speaking to English Classes. Every Chinese student is required to learn English. The students asked us questions about America and we tried to explain the American lifestyle. It was a treat for them, because in China the students don't really talk much in class. Their teachers mostly lecture, so they were happy to lead the discussion. They had also never seen a blonde before. They aksed us to sing songs from the Backstreet Boys and the Titanic theme song. In China, the peace sign is popular and they use it like a thumbs up. The pictures show me with my Chinese counterpart, Yandi, and a class of Chinese students. Watch for more notes back to Enloe and pictures from our group.
