The China Discovey Program

The AFS U.S.-China Discovery Initiative is designed to promote understanding between Chinese and American students and to foster a long-term relationship between the schools and their larger communities. It is sponsored by the US. Department of State and the Chinese government. Enloe and the Jiaonan #1 Middle School are each one of twelve high schools chosen in the United States and China to participate in the exchange. In October 2004 nine students and two Enloe faculty members traveled to China to spend three weeks living with and attending school with their hosts. Likewise, twelve Chinese students and their school administrators spent three weeks with Enloe families.

As part of their exchange, the Chinese and Enloe students worked on a joint project. The students interviewed family and friends to learn about their experiences and the effects of two wars, the Vietnam War and the Opium War, on families and both countries.
